The Up and Down of it.Thursday 21th October 1999Hormones a pumpin' and thoughts a crunchin' and body a slumpin' to the beat of life. Arythmic injections of stimulii astounding my ears and eyes until submission to the new makes me realise what has happened.A baby is born. The squiggles on this screen do not express what that means. Those who know simply need a neuronic trigger...the rest will say "aah yeah, how sweet". It aint the first time I have seen life emerge from my actions. The intensity is the same. I am addicted to the awe-inspiring wonder of it all. It aint logical, and it is guaranteed pain in one one or another, and it must be done. Which restaurant to go to, what shirt to wear, what song to play and why are potatoes cheaper around the corner are questions of insignificance. A life has been created. end of rant.
Neville Wran is the greatest*Wednesday 20th October 1999Jeff Kennett resigns after losing the Victorian election. When it comes to Premiers of Australian States Neville Wran still holds the mantel for brilliant timing. He knew when to go. Nifty Nev came in with style, lead with style and left in style. Jeff Kennett didn't last as long as Nifty, and he got to lose twice in effect. But he applied surgical standards to his resignation. A clean cut. He is out of politics and on to the next stage of his existence. The babble of the media will continue for some time on his reign in office. Jeff on the other hand, has already transcended the past. Where to next? That is the question of relevence. We know full well what Jeff did. We know full well what the Labor party will do. But what of Jeff? Is it back to the advertising game or some job of intrigue overseas? You see, Kennett (love him or hate him) actually lives life to a degree that is awe-inspiring. He may have been wrong on many policy issues - he may have had some unforgivable policy positions - but he knew the very essence of our shared existential predicament. He knows how to live. Hail Kennett - Long live Kennett. end of rant. * This is a specific use of the word 'greatest' that does not imply the author supported the views, policies or statements of this ex-premier of NSW, Victoria or elsewhere. Thinking is painfulTuesday 19th October 1999My daily rants have diminished in frequency to monthly rants. The cause is clear: I began thinking about them too much. The whole point of a rant is that it is not well thought out.A continuous spew of expression that highlights some emotion that has become an obsession. That is a rant. A gut reaction leading to an eruption of gross generalisations and half-truths. That is a rant. A good friend of mine, M.C., recently commented that there was little time for thinking these days. The pace of modern western existence in a large metropolis, tethered to a corporate machine means that the emphasis is on producing never-ending streams of crap that negated the possibility for any thought...he said. To think or not to think, that is the question. end of rant.
