Chika loses the plotMonday 22nd March 1999It is extremely worrying watching the Liberal party election advertisment where they embody the emotionally laden response of "humilating the vandals" into policy. This sort of twisted social rationalist policy is indicative of a failing electoral campaign and is a waste of party funds. I know there is only a week to go, but I tuely feel that the NSW liberals could better spend their money resurrecting Peter Collins. Chika comes across to me more as a politcal player than a policy thinker. I am left with the strong feeling of being addressed by a person who has no understanding of common reality. Instead I hear the ideas of someone who has an ideological attachment to an abstracted conception of non-parliamentary life. end of rant. Ray MartinThursday 18th March 1999I missed the broadcast of Media Watch. So I didn't see Ray Martin losing his cool with John S. and the Paxton boy.I did see reproductions of poor quality screen shots in the Daily Telegraph though. A pity I missed the footage it would seem. People who have seen it that I have spoken to all expressed it was quite the moment to see Ray losing his cool with the pair.
end of rant.
Can you be logical and creative? Monday 15th March 1999 This BSD is produced under the all monitoring, spelling checker. I also receive abstracted visual signals that I have employed doubtful grammatical structuring. While I ignore both, at my pleasure, I must surrender to the force of curiousity which demands an explication of the lexical misdemeanour. My loyal followers will be more than aware that my daily journal is more or less daily. I stand fully upright before you when I declare my promise to maintain this Herculean commitment. But the use of the added "features" of the modern word processing software is not consistent with the craft of word smithing. I indulge in daily rants and raves on any topic that takes my fancy. Now, dear reader, tell me if it is not strange to your reckoning that the indulgence of correct spelling and proper grammar is laughable within the context of vague generalisations and factless claims. It makes me think of that deep-rooted warning from our mothers (and their mothers before them) to always be sure of the cleanliness of one’s underwear per chance that physical recovery may be doubtful indeed, but possible. But the shame of spattered panties will never be overcome. Anyway, my God damned software is set to American spelling mode, thus resulting in a number of ever recurring warnings about the liberal use of the last vowel. I have no patriotic hold for non-American english. It simply that I am trained in a manner to use the extra "u" and its extensive application over my life has resulted in an appreciation for its visual beauty. And quite apart from the partisan debates on the "proper" form of written or spoken english, the willingness of so many people to follow the automated linguistic prescriptions of the giant software companies is terrifying. The little green and red squiggles on the monitor are no more than a reminder that you are allowing someone else to enter your creative space at their whim. If I use a text editor (or a pen indeed), and choose not consult a dictionary, thesaurus or encyclopedia, then so be it. It is my head, my hand and my time. But if I choose to refer to an aid that is fine as well. But to receive the unasked for and continual blinking reminders that a rule has been broken during a rant is unwelcomed. Conform or die, conform or die!! I am not being metaphorical. Turn off these features before the software turns off your features. I say no more! I am returning to the text editor for my next rant. This mod-con is a mod con indeed. End of rant Thursday 4th March 1999What makes the headlines? While nations negotiated about defense, weaponry and sovereignty, the media was more interested in the blowjobs Bill C. was getting. The US, China and other countries are all discovering a new cold war opportunity and yet I meet glazed eyes when I ask people I meet what they think of the situation. Britain hands over Hong Kong to China. That was a news story for a while and now.... Indonesia in our region is an interesting example. The Federal member for Bennolong seems quite happy to talk of divine preambles, the horrors of drugs and the attraction of zero-tolerance policing, and the media seem more than happy to discuss these things too. All worthy topics in their own right, I don't disagree. But are we presented news with appropriate emphasis and facts? end of rant. Wednesday 3rd March 1999Eggplant is not meat.I met a good friend for lunch today.I ordered an eggplant, tomato and cucumber sandwich, feeling no desire for meat. It was a clean and tasty experience. As I get older, my desire for the flesh of other animals is diminishing. Sometimes a feel the urge for dead animal, but more often I crave the clean and light sustenance of vegetable matter. I do not suspect a total withdrawal, but a radical rebalance of diet is definitely on the cards. On a similar vein, I am not finding I need much of most things these days. It is a sense of enough. A reaching of satisfaction and then stopping. end of rant. Tuesday 2nd March 1999A vote on a minor party is a wasted vote. The government has a mandate. Gambling raises revenue for hospitals. We need roads. STATE SCHMOLITICSHow is everyone poised for the March State election? Have we sunk into a pit of cynacism, or worse still, stuck to our ideological guns? There is a party called the Not the Necastle,Sydney,Wollongong Party aiming for the upper house which I feel a strange attraction to. I don't think Fred Nile makes his position clear enough for me to give him an indulgence at the ballot box. Voting for an unknown seems the safest bet. You are more likely to air your grievances at their electoral office, and you want give a damn chucking them out on the next run. We could devise a melbourne cup sweepstake style extraveganza with the full roast chicken and champagne to fully emphasise the fact that it is the celebration of change, rather than the significance of the players that counts.end of rant. Monday 1st March 1999Compulsory Voluntary Unionism.Strikes are an example of freedom of expression.
I don't use the gym! Thus I would protest at the student union payment counter. I was incensed at this complusory payment. Why should I pay for the gym or the salaries and vehicles of student union officials?Upon hearing that the Howard government is to aggressively encourage voluntary unionism I reacted in complete contradiction to my student views. A paradox. Ofcourse, I was a pre HECS student, so paying anything seemed an affront. Perhaps the real issue is that while many students may complain about the compulsory student union fees, few display any inclination to become involved in student union co-ordination. I was like that. Is it a tax, in effect? Whatever one may say about the role of the student union, the extraction of dollars from all students for the financial support for student relevent activities, services and facilities within the reality of a university doesn't seem unreasonable. Is it the money we pay, or the apathy we display, that irks our sense of fairness? end of rant. |
