Happy EasterFriday 2nd April 1999As I am catholic by birth, I cannot deny the inextricable hold of this christian holiday on my deep neural guilt center. What have I given up for lent? Will I be resurrected? Will I be damned?Well, I will be damned. That is the fate for a born again athiest. I could take the easy way out and claim agnosticism - but what is the point. Adopting such a position seems to have the same ludicrous plausability as the many purveyors of conspiracy theories that are so common nowadays. Easter is a time for avoiding the Royal Easter show (especially when it's raining), eating chocolate, not working for at least four days, having road tolls thrown at us on a state by state breakdown and making light of the underlying rationale for the holiday period. Easter is about rebirth. New Years Eve is about resolutions. Christmas is about rejoicing. Which in Australia, really amounts to the fact that they are all public holidays. The long weekend is surely our national religion. And Easter is the long weekend of all long weekends : A guaranteed Friday and Monday off. So happy long weekend to you. end of rant.
