6th February 1999Sex on the internetI chose not to watch E.T. I chose not to read American Psycho. I chose not to listen to Country & Western music. I know other people enjoy those sorts of things and if they want it, I don't care. If you think listening to heavy metal music causes people to commit suicide, then I can expect my arguments about the limitations in freedom of expression in society being the true cause of despair to fall on your "deaf" ears.Internet SEX. Is this still an issue? Are people still offended and scared by the powers of networked information? The internet, cable TV and satellite TV were not part of my growing up and yet I still recall the excitement of pornography obtained from under the beds of friends' parents, old piles of B&W hustlers at the local tip and the amateur drawings by all and sundry on scribble pads during class. These days, I can pick up a woman's magazine and learn "how to please him" in embarrasing detail. Books of all sorts can be purchased on all manner of sex related topics. Yet, real censorship seems to take place on other levels. In areas of political and cultural importance many information channels seem irretrievably blocked. The state of censorship in Australia by Irene Graham is a very interesting read, if you want facts instead of rants. end of rant.
