Blog ![]() "A blog sounds like something that blocks the S-bend..."
How high can a human jump? How much money does a person need to run 4 miles? The ability to swim fast doesn't interest me. Why do we pay taxes? Sponsor me : I want to break the world record in sloth. |
4th February 1999Privatise the OlympicsWhy it is that governments are throwing money into the gurgler to host the Olympics baffles me.It is highly questionable whether politicians can take it upon themselves to assume their electorate is happy for the appropriation of public monies to host an event of this nature. Provide a police force - sure. To administer the judicial system - sure. To help the disadvantaged - ofcourse. But to satisfy the desires of some segment of society to watch sports with my money and yours, is no better than theft. I don't want the olympics. I don't care about the olympics. But it will create jobs you cry! Yes, but no more than my freedom to spend my discretionary income on computer equipment, computers and books would do. The artificial distortion of the economy by the inappropriate appropriation of public funds not only brings forth only the same employment, but also starves those businesses which fail to receive the voluntary expenditure of money by people who want what they sell, but alas, are now condemned to be forced consumers of a circus they do not wish to know about. Private business interests alone should be proposing to host the olympics. They are more inclined to undertake the venture with prudent financial decisions, have the appropriate skills and resources to market the event and they alone will carry the risk of taking on such an event. Governments have no business running a sports carnival. Tell me seriously why we should spend even more money (on top of the consolidated revenue to which we all pay taxes) for the array of pointless fluffy toys depicting our native fauna? Why am I expected to purchase tickets to events I not only have no interest in, but see as a scourge on all things of interest to me? Oh but I am a party poop, a kill joy, a adreline philistine you cry! But excuse me dear reader, why is it that the government doesn't spend billions of dollars hosting a mega-multi-player-game of Quake? Why aren't the precious trickles of our hard earned cash used to host the world's largest paw paw peeling contest? You think I am being silly perhaps? Then tell me, I beg you if you can, what it is that a person needs to prove they are the fastest runner, the highest jumper, the strongest lifter in the world? Answer: their own body, and at best some props, which I dare say, they can damn well pay for themselves. Our public monies are plundered by giddy politicians, like children at someone else's birthday bash. Privatise the olympics now, and save our future generations from the wholesale pillage of our commonwealth. Private companies will only do what is profitable, seeking the monies of only those that are interested and will not have to support the hordes of "officials" that require expense accounts.
