Information Addiction

A world of information overload causes many people to close their minds off new information - new ideas. The skill of filtering input from out there is becoming ever more important. You don't want to let everything in, but you don't want to miss out on some important lead.

What to do?

It took me a very long time to use the internet effectively, for example. One search would lead to another, and whammo! Instead of discovering an online text for some out of copyright book, I would be considering the purchase of a full size replica of a giraffe from some guy in Arizona, with money I don't have.

The constant bombardment of advertising around us is also destroying our ability to remain centered. It was one thing to have advertisements in print publications. But then radio, TV, billboards, bus seats, fruit stalls, the internet, neon signs, the list is endless.

A program on Radio National the other day, made reference to some new "help kids learn how to read" game that uses corporate names! And this is for infants!!

In fact, why are you reading this? Such rants are best avoided, for they impart no discernable value to you the reader. Or am I being to harsh? Perhaps I am too hardened in my views. Perhaps this kind of rant gives something other than useful facts.

That's it!

Clearly there is an oversupply of useful information. The sensless raves from individuals such as myself help break the spell that every thing is mission critical info. The frivolous and the pointless activities of humans are just as important as the serious and useful.

But ofcourse even the pointless activities become co-opted. Sport can be seen as nothing else as the determined effort by people to perform a pointless activity. Hit a ball, catch a ball, throw a ball. Major corporate sponsorship now means you just can't watch the local cricket, or footy with full distracted pleasure. You have to pay to watch the big game.

In fact, many people seem more than happy to encourage all of us to be pure spectators, and defer living a life until we have paid our dues to the entertainment givers.

end of rave.

end of rave.
