The current un-united nation effort by Australia, Indonesia et al exemplifies the problems that exist with the current concept of international law when it comes to dealing with the un-authorised movement of people. Apart from the power plays between Australia and Indonesia, an issue of interest in this stand-off is the role of the United Nations.

The United Nations desparately needs some of its own territories around the world.

How else can we sensibly deal with the movement of people away from countries that they do not wish to be in any more. There would be no argument of where such people could go. And the UN would be able to apply a standardised approach to dealing with refgees, assylum seekers, etc.

You are correct in thinking that not many countries would be interested in releasing control of some of their own territory. But there are benefits to such a move for a country brave enough to contemplate it. For one thing, there could be a washing of hands for those niggling problems of how to house, treat and process the people.

The people themselves will benefit by receiving a UN sanctioned level of treatment and a non-national approach to their plight. And if there were multiple territories under the control of the UN, then the transfer of individuals to rationalise resources could be indulged in more readily.

The UN would also be able to develop a more accurate picture of the plight of refugees. Pressure could be brought to bear on nations to co-operate with the UN with the final placement of individuals.

Pie in the sky, I admit, but constructing such a fantastical notion is easier to bear than watching the Federal politicians who do not have the gumption to deal with this situation in a decent manner.

End Of Rant.
